Shoulda Been a Cowboy by Maisey Yates
Book 0.5 in The Copper Ridge Series
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Summary from Goodreads:
In this sexy, sweet prequel novella to her new series, USA Today bestselling author Maisey Yates welcomes readers to the charming small town of Copper Ridge, Oregon, where it’s never too late for second chances…
There’s not much about his teenage years that Jake Caldwell can be proud of. Except maybe for keeping his hands off cute, kind-hearted Cassie Ventimiglia. She was the only one who saw him as more than a tattooed rebel who couldn’t wait to leave the ranching life behind. Now he’s back in Copper Ridge to sell his father’s property-and staying right above Cassie’s coffee shop. And out of nowhere, the girl he’s never forgotten is offering a whole lot more than fresh-baked muffins…
Jake’s dark, smoldering appeal hasn’t changed one bit. But Cassie has. Following everyone else’s rules didn’t quite work out. Time to ask for what she’s always wanted…and what Jake’s more than happy to give. A wild, hot romance that could make a one-time bad boy realize he’s back for good.
It’s been 15 years since Jake left Copper Ridge. He’s back now after his father’s death to settle his estate. Jake doesn’t expect to find his high school tutor and crush Cassie renting a building from his father. Jake just wants to settle his dad’s property and get out of a town that holds bad memories but he still wants Cassie. Cassie has always done the right thing. She’s been a Good Girl. Cassie is finally ready to change and be bold and who better then sexy Jake her high school crush to be bad with. But will these two find more together then just a good time?
I really did love both Jake and Cassie’s characters but they were not as interesting as Kate and Jack(from Bad News Cowboy). And I didn’t have a big connection with either character but I did respect both characters for pulling their lives together after life changing events. I love how they both never forget each other even after all those years. So Romantic. I was really mad at most of the people in Cassie’s life. The people that should have loved her most made her have such a low opinion of herself. It was sad but Jake really sees Cassie and loves her for herself. I love it when he tells her she always has to be herself. That is what every girl wants to hear. Cassie is the only one who has ever really seen Jake. Not as a trouble maker and bad boy but as a person and that is what Jake has never had. They are a great couple and balance each other well. But I did feel like I had read this story before. The characters weren’t very original and was disappointed in that. The ending was a little rushed but a lot of novellas suffer from that. A lot of novellas don’t develop the characters enough because there just isn’t room but Maisey Yates did a wonderful job and I really felt I knew the characters and they weren’t the same characters they were in the beginning that the were in the end. I am loving this series and can’t wait to read more books in it. Even if this one wasn’t a favorite.
