Book 1 in The Tanner Trilogy

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Summary from Goodreads:

Carli Tanner, world-renowned photojournalist for International Views, captures exotic landscapes in Africa and a South American jungle, when a telegram arrives to deliver the devastating news that her father is dead. Returning to Wyoming, the place of her childhood and Bear Tanner’s game preserve, Carli discovers that his death was no accident. Her sister, Samantha Tanner, who runs their father’s ranch in Colorado, along with Shaun Tanner, their brother and Sheriff of Centennial, Wyoming, realize the worst of betrayals come from those closest to them. As a special request from the Director of the FBI, Agent Ethan Brooks is sent to Wyoming to offer assistance to the local law enforcement in identifying who killed Bear Tanner. Having lived only in the big cities on the East Coast, the wilderness of Wyoming and the new owner of Tanner’s Outdoor Adventures offer Ethan an opportunity to redefine his life. Agent Brooks has a unique way of solving cases, and he’ll need to employ all of his skills, and those of Sheriff Tanner, if they are to determine if Bear’s murderer is also guilty of the threats against the Tanner siblings.

My Review

This book starts off with the murder of Bear Tanner. Carli Tanner is a photographer for a famous magazine and is always traveling for her job but loves every minute of it. When she gets the news about her father Bear she rushes home. Ethan is an Agent with the FBI. He is a genius at getting inside a suspect’s head and figuring out their next move. He has just solved a case and caught a child killer when his boss sends him to Wyoming to investigate the murder of Bear Tanner. I was addicted from page 1. I just couldn’t put this book down. Before I knew it I was halfway through. Ethan is much more tortured hero then Logan was in Of Dolphins and Desires(the last novel I read by this author). He hates himself for the people he couldn’t save. If he had only figured out who the killer was faster or he feels horrible that he has to have victims to get a profile and catch the killer. He has a strong sense of justice and wants to help get abducted children back and put child killer’s in jail. Ethan also doesn’t have partners and always works alone. Carli is such a free spirit and I love how independent she is. Ethan loves how real Carli is. She doesn’t worry about how she looks all the time and isn’t into being dramatic. That is one of the reasons he is drawn to her. Ethan and Carli have great chemistry. I loved Ethan and Carli’s banter and double meaning conversations. One of my favorite moments was when Ethan was there for Carli when she had a breakdown and starting grieving her father. When you learn about Ethan’s past you understand why he is do dedicated to his work. I loved how Carli and Ethan are both talented artists and how they have a bond through that. I loved how the author told the story from so many PoVs but it did start to get a little much and some of them could have been left out and not lessened my enjoyment of the story. I wanted more focus on the hero and heroine than the other characters and it started getting bogged down with other characters when I felt the story should have been more focused on Ethan and Carli. Venne’s writing flowed much easier in this book then in Of Dolphins and Desires. This book is also a little long almost 500 pages so don’t pick up this book if you want a quick read. I love how Venne draws attention to current issues happening in America today like poaching, conservation of wildlife and child abuse. She did a wonderful job with each of them. I did love all the characters even the side ones. I found them all well developed and engaging. I was particularly interested in her sister Samatha and her brother Shaun Tanner who are going to get their own books. Samatha’s is out and waiting on my kindle. If you love suspense with some romance then I highly recommend this book. If you are looking for a more focused romance then you might want to look elsewhere.
