Genre:Young Adult Fantasy
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation
After the horrible revelation from City of Bones about Clary and Jace being brother and sister and Valentine making off with the cup City of Ashes picked up faster then City of Bones.Valentine also shows up early and we find out more of his evil plan to take down the Clave.Valentine is a great bad guy and is easy to hate.I wasn’t surprise finding out his favorite book Paradise Lost and who he connects with in that book and what his favorite line was.
There is a lot of emotional anguish in this book but really how can there not be emotional anguish. The hero and heroine are in love but they are brother and sister. They know what they feel but it is wrong. While Simon having confessed his feelings to Clary is ready to try for a relationship with her but is she ready to try with Simon and if she can’t love him like he loves her is she ready to lose her best friend? This book leaves Clary with confused feelings and many painful moments with both Jace and Simon.
We also get to see the faeries for the first time and going into the court to meet the Seelie Queen made me see faeries in a new way and trust me they are a beautiful but cruel people. The Seelie Queen makes me want to pull her hair out but I think she would find anyone trying to do that amusing. She seems to find humans amusing.I loved meeting Maia a young werewolf girl from Luke’s pack. She goes onto play an even bigger role in the later books.I love Magnus and he was back in all his glitter and glamour and plays a huge role in this book.Alec makes some growth in this book and I love his relationship with Magnus.
Plus you meet the internal affairs person of the shadowhunters called the Inquisitor. She seems to have a personal hatred for Valentine and anyone who has a connection to him.
I love this book after City of Bones I was worried this book wouldn’t live up to the first one but it did plus more.I recommend this series to anyone who loves action, great characters, romance, and humor.
